Why should natural resource professionals be concerned about insuring
that outdoor recreation is enjoyed by people of all cultures and that
the ranks of agency employees are similarly diverse? We’ll hear from various
state and federal agency personnel about why this issue is an urgent one
for natural resource agencies and organizations.

Interview: The Demographics of Diversity
Guest: Emilyn Sheffield. As the Director of the Tourism and Communication
Design Partnership, Sheffield directs a wide-ranging program of applied
research, strategic planning and cooperative marketing projects. She will
provide unique insights into demographic trends and the challenges/opportunities
that these ethnic and cultures shifts present to the outdoor recreation
industry and wildlife and fisheries management agencies. Sheffield is
actively engaged with many clients, including local parks and tourism
organizations as well as the US Forest Service, the National Park Service,
and the Bureau of Land Management.

segment: Texas Outreach Efforts
The fastest growing segment of the Texas population is Hispanic, and within
a few short years, the majority of the population in Texas will be “minorities.”
Texas conservation professionals have been concerned about this issue
for many years and have developed numerous programs to reach out to non-traditional
users of the outdoors. We’ll take a look at some of the strategies being
used in Texas to reach out and involve these new audiences.

and the potential career paths in conservation and wildlife management.

diversity but putting real efforts into outreach to involve new populations
in participation and employment.
